DauDing Easy Readers Book 1 豆丁識字故事第1冊

Updated: Feb 21

My daughter loves to learn to read. She always points at Chinese characters and English words and reads. I did not plan to start reading this early (she is not three yet), but a few weeks ago she told me sadly that she did not know how to read and asked when she can read like I do. That was how our literacy journey began. 女兒喜歡閱讀,常常會指著中文和英文字唸書。本來我不打算這麼早開始教她認字(她還未三歲),但是幾個禮拜前,她不開心的跟我說她不會閱讀,又問我什麼時候才能好像我一樣可以閱讀得這麼好。就是這樣,我們開始了我們的讀寫之旅。

Despite being eager to learn to read, my daughter does not like "dry" repetition or meaningless activities. She loves stories, so I am writing stories to help her learn Chinese characters. 雖然女兒熱衷學習,但是她不喜歡無意義、重覆的活動。她喜歡故事,所以我就寫故事,以幫助她學習中文字。

Rationale 理念

  • When I design which characters to teach first, I pay attention to the structure of the characters. According to "Reference Materials on Teaching of Chinese to NCS Students - Teacher's Manual" developed by Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, teaching characters according to their structures is more effective than teaching according to meaning or random teaching. 當我決定先教什麼字,我考慮到字的結構。根據香港理工大學中文及雙語學系所編的《針對非華語學生的中文教學參考資料 - 教師手冊》, 常用字按照結構來教,學習效果比隨意或按意思編排的好。

  • I am teaching the 500 most frequent words used in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China. ("Reference Materials on Teaching of Chinese to NCS Students - Teacher's Manual" ) 我教的是香港、台灣和中國大陸最常用的500個字。(《針對非華語學生的中文教學參考資料 - 教師手冊》)

  • My daughter also loves to write, but I am NOT including stroke order in the booklet. Young kids learn best with demonstration. (Pictures of characters with stroke order can be intimidating to some children.) It is best for the teacher/parent to show the child how to write stroke by stroke (i.e., grown-up writes a stroke, then child writes the stroke). [You may find stroke orders in our DauDing Easy Readers and Activities books though. There are meanings and Mandarin and Cantonese pronunciations as well.] 我的女兒也喜歡寫字,但是我沒有把筆順放到小書內,因為直接模仿大人寫字是最有效的方法(有時候,附筆順的中文字看起來挺可怕的)。老師/家長最好一筆一筆的示範教孩子寫子(就是大人寫一筆,小孩寫一筆)。[你可以在我們的《豆丁識字故事及活動冊》找到筆順、字詞意思和普通話及廣東話的拼音。]

  • Since the purpose is for character recognition, I do not include any form of pronunciation guide in the booklet, which could be bad distraction. 由於教學目的是認字,我並沒有加上拼音。有時候,拼音反而會分散注意力。
